October 23rd: Part I (Dear Papa)

It just so happens that two of my very favorite people in this big, wide world share a birthday. Well, separated by 45 years, but still. They share a lot of the same qualities, really. Almost makes me believe in astrology. (That it works, not that it exists. I know it exists.)

Anyway.

Two letters for the 23rd of October.

The first for my grandfather, who is likely the best person I’ve ever known, and the second for a sweet friend.

***

Dear Papa,

My first memory of you is probably the thing we used to do when I was little (and up to when I wasn’t little), in which, whenever I’d leave your house, we’d hug each other and put our faces together for good-bye kisses. Somehow, it started that you would hum, so I started humming too; and the humming got longer and longer each time, until we would laugh because it was just ridiculous. I remember your face was always scratchy, and you always smelled like cologne or after-shave or something.

I loved that.

And even though we don’t really do it anymore, I still love that we used to.

When I was growing up, I wondered sometimes if you felt left out because I (later, we) interacted much more with Gram. You were so quiet, but I always knew you were there. I hope you know that I was thinking about you and wondering what you were thinking. And when I get quiet like that (because it’s usual for me, too), I hope other people see me like I saw you.

You are one of the strongest, best people I know. You are observant and wise. You think; you plan; you organize. And you always offer a Mapsco. :)

But those are not even the things that are remarkable about you.

The remarkable part is that a farm boy from Illinois grew up to care so much about other people, to think about what is right and just, and to respect and acknowledge good in everyone. I have never heard you say a cross word about anyone. (True statement.) You are kind and compassionate and everything that is bright and good.

You are an example to everyone you meet. I just happen to be lucky enough to have your genes. :)

I love you a lot.

Alicia
